Hapoel Jerusalem announced its first signing for the upcoming season on Sunday: former Maccabi Givat Shmuel guard Timmy Bowers. Bowers, the BSL runner-up in scoring last season with 21.4 points per game, reunites with former college teammate Mario Austin, who continues in the capital after a strong first season. The pair spent three seasons together at Mississippi State between 2000-2003, helping the Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. "I'm happy to join a great club like Hapoel Jerusalem," Bowers said in a statement. "I'm aware of the expectations from me and the team. I know the team well, mostly through Mario Austin, who recommended to me that I join." Bowers, 24, was the runner-up to Maccabi Rishon's Omar Sneed in The Jerusalem Post's Most Valuable Player voting last season. He can play both guard positions, but is expected to spend more time as a shooting guard in Jerusalem. His signing could be a sign that last year's starter, Roger Mason Jr., will not return. Bowers is the first player that new coach Dan Shamir has signed. Shamir is currently in Las Vegas scouting potential players at the NBA summer leagues. Maccabi adds Gutt Also Sunday, Maccabi Tel Aviv announced that former scout Daniel Gutt has returned to the team in the capacity of assistant coach. Gutt, 41, spent six seasons as Maccabi's scout, before taking a job as scout and assistant coach at Dynamo Moscow two years ago. He spent last year as an assistant with BC Kiev and will work with the Russian national team and David Blatt this summer. Gutt, who will be new coach Neven Spahija's second assistant behind Guy Goodes, will handle the scouting duties for Maccabi as well.
