Defending champion Rise-Hi opened its 2006 amateur softball in Israel series season with a 13-4 win over the Beit Shemesh Suns on Thursday night at Kibbutz Gezer.
Rise-Hi starting pitcher Ed Harow scattered four hits to pick up the win, as he got hitting support from Chaim Jacobson, who hit a two-run homer and drove in four runs, and Jeff Mouio, who had three hits and scored three runs and also played solid defense in left field. Earl Harow also had three hits.
Optica International 11, Nefesh B'Nefesh 7
Optica International spoiled Nefesh B'Nefesh's series debut on Friday. Veteran pitcher Joel Katzin picked up the victory with a solid performance, allowing only two runs in the first five innings. Matt Churchill led OI on offense, with a homer and a double, and on defense as catcher.
Kenny Zwiebel also homered for Optica, and Aaron Katsman slammed two doubles and scored three runs. Binyamin Kaffel and Josh Harvey each had two hits apiece.
Nefesh B'Nefesh, which took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single by Steve Accardi, fell behind 10-2 but mounted a spirited comeback, scoring three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh. A key double play from Kaffel to Zach Harvey helped end the threat and the final NBN batter flied out to Katsman to seal the win for OI.
For Nefesh B'Nefesh, Yedidya Rausman went 4-for-4 with four stolen bases, Avrum Aaron homered and doubled, and Mike Hochman had a pair of doubles.
Suns 6, Contact 3
Andre Isaacson, last year's MVP, lead the Suns team on offense and defense to a victory over Contact International. Isaacson pitched seven scoreless innings and fielded his position like a gold glover, completely shutting down Contact's offense.
He also had a great night at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
Defense was the motto of the day and all the Suns stepped up to the plate. Mark Chass played superbly in left field, and he scored two runs and had two stolen basses. Lavey Freidman and Jan Wimpfheimer continued their stellar play and anchored the team's infield and offense.
