Carmel Vernia and Larry Bergman finished first at the Israel qualifying tournament for the International Pairs competition after the final round held Tuesday at Gaash Golf Club. Vernia and Bergman, who beat out 79 other pairs to take the title and finished with 43 points based on the better-ball Stableford method of scoring, will travel to Wales to face the top pairs from other countries at the International Pairs final August 9-11. The second Israeli competition of its kind, the tournament featured a shotgun-style start in which every group of pairs simultaneously began play on a different hole. The Gaash Golf Club, which employees 14, including four golf pros, is located on land owned by the Gaash Kibbutz, and privately owned. Since its creation in 1999, the club has "doubled the golf in Israel," according to the club's general manager, who also said the club hopes "to make the International Pairs competition a tradition." Rounding out the trophy-winners were second place finishers Phillip Mendel & Roni Hayman (42), and Zohar Alon & Eddie Shapiro (41).
