Softball: Reigning champ OI opens with a bang
Jerusalem Softball champions Optica International continued its winning ways, defeating the league’s newest team, Phillip Stein’s Sox, 9-7 in the opening game of the 2013 season for both teams.
OI pitcher Danny Gewirtz kept the Sox off balance for most of the afternoon with a fine pitching performance, limiting them to 11 singles and a double.
Gewirtz had plenty of defensive help, notably from his son, Yair, who made several stellar defensive plays and saving at least four or five runs in the process. Offensively, it was a balanced day at the plate for OI paced by Naftali Schwartz’s mammoth home run to left field and a double.
For the Sox, Ron Gorodetzer pitched decently enough to keep the Sox in the game while also getting a solid defensive effort from his team.
Seth Gerson had two hits David Tover had two hits and an RBIs while Chaim Jacobson drove in two runs. Josh Blacher, Hershey Snukal and Uri Richman each had two hits while Ariel Gilor scored 3 runs for the Sox.
In other action, the Beit Shemesh Suns and the Harow team kicked off their 2013 season on Sunday night. Ed Harow kept the Beit Shemesh batters off balance, while Amiad Harow hit a solo HR, newcomer Mati Laufer added a three-run HR, and Tzvi Harow went 4-for-4 to lead the Harow offense to a 19-4 win to kick off their inaugural campaign.
