On Friday, the young cricketers from the Ashdod/Lod and the Ra’anana squads met for the final of the Under-19 Israel Cricket League.
The day started well for Rafi Schachat’s Ra’anana side as he won the toss and elected to field first.
Ashdod/Lod was soon in trouble as a fine piece of fielding from Schachat saw Ashdod/Lod opener Gilon Samuels run out for 4. Another wicket fell before star batsmen Itamar Kehimkar played some majestic shots to reach his 50.
With partners and overs running out, Kehimkar played one shot too many and was caught magnificently by fellow Israel senior player Josh Evans on the boundary. Kehimkar was ably supported by Ashdod/Lod captain Yossi Ochayon, who scored a patient 31 and shared in an 80-run partnership with his star teammate.
Josh Foley-Comer, Gil Nojman and Rafi Schachat took two wickets apiece.
Ra’anana then took full control of the match chasing down the 128 set by Ashdod/Lod, with Israeli Evans playing some beautiful cover drives on his way to 58. Evans was given good support by Mikki Cohen, who cashed in on his vast experience by scoring 24.
Ra’anana won the contest with 6 overs remaining and 8 wickets in hand.
Following the excellent finish to the U19 season, this Friday Ra’anana and Lions Lod will vie for the senior league championship.
