Shahar Pe'er advanced to the third round of the US Open for a third straight year on Thursday night, crushing American Bethanie Mattek 6-2, 6-1. The 20-year-old Israeli thoroughly outclassed Mattek and is now just one win away from reaching the last 16 at Flushing Meadows for a second straight year. The key for Pe'er, who is ranked No. 19 in the world, was her excellent break point conversion (5 of 6) and superb first serve percentage (69 percent) that limited Mattek (123) to a single break point throughout the entire match. "I played much better than I did in the first round. I was more aggressive and I dictated the play," Pe'er said after the match. "I'm pleased with the way I played. "After my first round match my coaches told me I have to be more aggressive if I want to continue to win." The Israeli also spoke of the support she's been receiving during her matches from the local Jewish community. Pe'er will next face the winner of the match between Nicole Vaidisova (15) and Flavia Pennetta (83) that was played late Thursday night . Pe'er claimed the first break of the match in the third game and would take four of the next five games to wrap-up the first set. Four straight games for the Israeli in the second set gave her an unassailable lead and after one hour and eight minutes she completed the victory by breaking Mattek in the seventh game. Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich came back from a one set deficit to defeat Ashley Fisher and Bobby Reynolds 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to progress to the second round on Thursday night. The Israelis, who are seeded eighth at Flushing Meadows, will face Pablo Cuevas and Werner Eschauer in the second round. On Wednesday night, Pe'er and partner Tathiana Garbin, who are seeded 12th in the doubles tournament, advanced to the second round by defeating Natalie Grandin and Klara Zakopalova 6-1, 6-2. French Open mixed doubles champions Ram and Nathalie Dechy cruised past Maria Kirilenko and Igor Andreev late Wednesday night, winning 6-1 6-0 in their first round match.
