Russia says didn't promise withdrawal of pro-Iranian forces from Syria

MOSCOW - Russia has not promised to ensure a withdrawal of pro-Iranian forces from Syria, RIA news agency quoted Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying on Tuesday.

The presence of Iran in Syria is legitimate, Lavrov was quoted as saying by another agency, Interfax.

This comes just one day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that he told Moscow and Washington that Israel will continue carrying out strikes in Syria despite the ceasefire agreement “in accordance with our understanding and in accordance with our security needs.”

A United States official told reporters on Sunday that a ceasefire deal between the US, Russia and Jordan included a provision to remove non-Syrian forces from Syria's southwest.
