Heeb: The New Jew Review, the magazine that recently gained notoriety in the United States for a sex-themed issue featuring graphic renderings of biblical verse, sponsors the first Israeli installment of its popular storytelling series this Tuesday at Jerusalem's Daila Club.
Originally held in New York City, where Heeb is based, the series later expanded across to Los Angeles, a city that Josh Neuman, Heeb's 33-year-old editor-in-chief, compares to Tel Aviv.
Shows sponsored by the magazine outside the United States have featured well-known young figures such as Randy and Jason Sklar, the twin hosts of ESPN's Cheap Seats, Stephen Glass of New Republic notoriety and Susie Essman of Curb Your Enthusiasm. The Jerusalem show, sponsored by Corner Prophets, will feature author, slam poet and spoken word performer Matthue Roth, as well as DJ, poet and journalist Daniel "Mobius" Sieradski.
Roth, an Orthodox Jew from Philadelphia, published a collection of poems entitled, Yom Kippur a Go-Go and recently published his first novel, Never Mind the Goldbergs. In his writing and performances, Roth explores themes ranging from religion and sexuality to music and vegetarianism. Over his career he has shared the stage with performers including hip-hop artist Mos Def, musician Carlos Santana, author Dave Eggers, self-help guru Deepak Chopra, the rock band The Butchies and Jewish punks YidCore.
Sieradski is probably best known in the Jewish world as the editor-in-chief of the popular blog Jewschool.com, and locally as the activist/artist behind Corner Prophets and its events, which include the monthly Old Jeruz Cipher freestyle hip-hop event, also held at Daila.
