Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, a pro-Syrian and a close ally of Hizbullah guerrillas, said on Sunday that Israel's bloody assault could push desperate Lebanese citizens to sacrifice their lives to defend their country - and even commit acts of terrorism.

"Violence generates terrorism, and this is not the way," he said.

But Lahoud vowed not to bend to Israeli pressure.
"The Lebanese will not surrender," he said.
He pleaded to the UN Security Council directly, saying "Stop violence and arrange a cease-fire, and then after that we'll be ready to discuss all matters."

Lahoud also accused the Security Council of delaying intervention to stop Israel's five-day military operation, giving the Jewish state extra time to make Lebanon surrender to its conditions.
