A female suicide bomber blew herself up northeast of Baghdad, wounding seven US soldiers and five Iraqi civilians, the military said Wednesday.

A statement said the attack happened Tuesday near the town of Baqouba, capital of the violent Diyala province 35 miles northeast of Baghdad, when the woman detonated her explosives belt.

The wounded were flown by helicopter to a military hospital and the bombing was under investigation, it added.

An Iraqi army officer in Diyala said Tuesday that a female suicide bomber targeted a US patrol near Baqouba, wounding five Iraqi civilians. The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to share the information with the media, did not know if there were US casualties.
