Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki vowed Saturday to remain in Basra until security in the city is restored.
Al-Maliki told tribal leaders in the southern city that he "will not leave Basra until security is restored" and those who have taken up arms against the government are punished.
Saturday's remarks were broadcast by government television four days after Iraqi troops launched their crackdown against Shi'ite militias and gangs in the city.
