Dr. Ali Akbar Salehi' is an Iranian academic and politician who has served as Iranian Representative in the International Atomic Energy Agency. Salehi has a BSc from the American University of Beirut and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which he earned in 1977. He was also Associate Professor and Chancellor of Sharif University of Technology and a member of the Iranian Academy of Sciences and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy. For more than four years Salehi served as the permanent representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the International Atomic Energy Agency. On 18 December 2003, Salehi signed the Additional Protocol to the safeguard agreement, on behalf of Iran. On 20 January 2004, Salehi was nominated as a scientific advisor to the Iranian foreign minister. On 16 July 2009, he was appointed as the new head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, replacing Gholam Reza Aghazadeh. On December 5, 2009, Fox News identified Salehi as "Iran's vice president."
