Harardhere is a town in the Mudug province of central Somalia, also spelled Harardheere and Xarardhere. It has become notorious in recent times as a base for piracy in Somalia. A pirate cooperative exchange opened here in 2009 to finance pirate activities. Mohamed Said Iyow, the first member of parliament to be elected, hailed from the Sarur clan, based in Harardhere. He was a leading figure in securing independence for Somalia, and was a key member of the Somali Youth League (SYL). Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, the nation's second president (1967-1969) and former prime minister (1960-1964), as well as General Mohamed Abshir Muuse, a former police commander, also hailed from Harardhere.
