An unidentified male Jewish teenager is in moderate condition after being repeatedly stabbed Thursday afternoon with a screwdriver by an Arab assailant near a bus stop in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of A-Tur.

According to police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, the attack took place at approximately 2:30 p.m., when the teen was approached by the suspect and assaulted without provocation.

“An Israeli man was stabbed in the neck and back with a screwdriver by an Arab attacker who fled the scene, and police units are searching the area for the suspect,” said Rosenfeld shortly after the attack.

“A wide range of units, including Border Police and Special Patrol Units, have set up road blocks to capture the suspect. Heightened security will continue in the area until we apprehend the attacker. We’re looking into this on an intelligence level and operational level.”

Rosenfeld said the victim was treated at the scene by Magen David Adom paramedics and transferred to Hadassah University Medical Center in Mount Scopus in moderate condition.

As of 7:30 p.m. Thursday night, the suspect has yet to be found.

The stabbing comes two days after police announced a NIS 1 billion security initiative in east Jerusalem involving 1,200 extra troops, six new police stations in flashpoint neighborhoods, and nearly 200 CCTV cameras.

One of the police stations is slated to be built in A-Tur, nearby where the stabbing took place. The other five will be in Jabel Mukaber, Issawiya, Beit Safafa, Shuafat, and Sur Baher.
