Pilobolus TAPAC January 23 American dance company Pilobolus is no stranger to Israel, as its members have toured here several times before and know to expect a warm reception. During its 36 years, its basic, playful and imaginative artistic approach hasn't changed much. Pilobolus's initial fascination with the human body and its physical and mechanical capabilities seems to fuel them relentlessly. Over the years, the dance world evolved and perceptions of the body became tied to socio-political issues, but the group's creations kept producing aesthetic, gymnastic and entertaining shows with wonderful athletic dancers. A new spectator to their highly polished craft is often left speechless, as the intriguing human forms evolve on stage in imaginative ways. Often, the works start with a good, compelling idea but go no further. The short pieces that comprised the evening inevitably diluted themselves before they were over. Repeated encounters with the group do not provide the same excitement as the first, for even the best physical gimmicks become mechanical. But it was a wonderful experience to see them perform Rushes 2007, choreographed by our own Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak. Their exhilarating creation enabled the six Pilobolusians to swim so fluently in Pinto-Pollak theatrical pool. Neither party has looked so good since they started out.
