Eden by the sea

The Jerusalem-based ensemble Eden Mi Qedem perform their signature mix of religious Middle-Eastern music and psychedelic rock.

Jerusalem-based ensemble Eden Mi Qedem breaks out this Thursday night with a performance at the East-West House in Jaffa. Led by singer/guitarist Shmuel Nelson, Eden Mi Qedem has performed their signature mix of religious Middle-Eastern music and psychedelic rock at festivals, concerts and weddings, but this is their first public appearance in the Tel Aviv/Jaffa area. Nelson released their debut, self-titled CD in late 2006. The disc, which introduced a contemporary, dance-floor influence to Eden Mi Qedem's music, caught the attention of Yisrael Borochov, the founder of the legendary East-West Ensemble, who booked them at the East-West House to introduce their music to a new audience. Anchored by Nelson's soulful compositions and improvisatory guitar playing, Eden Mi Qedem is comprised of the finest American and Israeli musicians from the Jerusalem area, including kanun player Elad Fabbay and fiery drummer Noam David. Thursday, April 5, at 9 p.m., East-West House, 16 Rehov Arlik, Jaffa. Info: (03) 683-8129; NIS 60/50 for Jerusalem residents who contact the band in advance at 054-522-4385.
