Portman not a 'Munich' fan
Jerusalem-born actress Natalie Portman says she doesn't agree with "half" of Steven Spielberg's Munich, the Academy Award-nominated film that has drawn harsh reviews in some quarters for its portrayal of Israel's response to the killings of its athletes at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics.
"[I don't] agree with half of what's in Munich," the Star Wars actress told Entertainment Weekly earlier this month, "but political filmmaking is about putting something out there that people aren't going to like."
Oscar-nominated a year ago for her role in Closer, Portman has occasionally spoken out in support of Israel in the past, meeting with pro-Israel groups in the United States and publishing a letter about the country in The Harvard Crimson while an undergraduate at the Ivy League university.
The star of a Broadway revival of The Diary of Anne Frank in 1997, Portman took graduate courses at Hebrew University in the fall of 2004 and shot Free Zone with Israeli director Amos Gitai the following spring. - Nathan Burstein
