The Cameri Theater of Tel Aviv will next month make history as the first Israeli theater group to take part in the "Shakespeare in Washington Festival" when it stages its rendition of Hamlet there. The company will perform seven shows in Hebrew with simultaneous translation into the original English. US Ambassador to Israel Richard H. Jones hosted an early send-off for the Cameri troupe at his residence last week. Ambassador Jones got into the spirit of things and even recited a passage from Hamlet's play-within-a-play.

Noam Semel, general director of the Cameri, and Omri Nitzan, artistic director of the company and the director of Hamlet, were bubbling with excitement for their upcoming visit to Washington, D.C. Semel told the diplomats at the reception that while the Cameri regularly features at international theater houses, a visit to the US is "very important".
The Cameri's production of Hamlet has represented Israel at the International Shakespeare Festival in Gdansk Poland (2005) and at the International Shakespeare Festival in Bucharest, Romania (2006). Award-winning stage and screen actor Itay Tiran holds the title role. The play won five awards at last year's domestic Theater Prize Awards, including Best Play, Best Director, and Best Actor.
