Three for the price of one at the opera
The singers in the Israel Opera's production of Puccini's three one-act operas, "Il Trittico" (the Triptych), are all Israeli. Some are well established, like tenor Gaby Sadeh, bass-baritone Eduardo Chama and soprano Larissa Tetuev. Others, like soprano Ira Bertman and mezzo Svetlana Sandler are well on their way. All are promising, like young tenor Telman Guzhevsky who's making his IO debut.
Sadeh sings "Luigi in Il Tabarro" (The Cloak), a melodramatic tale of passion, adultery and revenge set on a Seine barge. Tetuev is his lover and bass Vladimir Braun sings Michele, the wronged husband.
Bertman and Sandler are nun and aunt in "Suor Angelica," the story of a young noblewoman forced to become a nun when she has a son out of wedlock. Chama plays the title role in "Gianni Schicci," a comedy in which crafty lawyer Gianni provides an unpleasant surprise for a lot of greedy relatives who are after their dad's property.
The director is Giancarlo Del Monaco who gave us the sparkling La Cenerentola" some seasons back and the conductor is IO music director Asher Fisch.
"Il Trittico" is the Israel Opera's last production of the season and plays at the Tel Aviv performing Arts Center from June 21 to July 7.
Foursome take on Webber in June
Israel Musicals, a professional English language performance group, is featuring four top singers from Israel and abroad in a tribute to the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Performances begin June 14 at Jerusalem's Khan Theater, and continue with performances on June 25 in Ra'anana and June 26 in Netanya.
Webber's works include the musicals "Cats," "Evita," "The Phantom of the Opera," and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." The Israel Musicals group will present both favorites and lesser-known works from these shows and others. They will also touch on other composers who relate to the Andrew Lloyd Webber phenomenon.
Performers include Aaron Allsbrook, a tenor who recently immigrated from Los Angeles, Yisra'el Lutnick, a tenor from New York, Aviella Trapido, an Israeli soprano and Lisa Woo, an American soprano.
The performance series will donate some of the proceeds to Meir Panim (www.mifalchaim.org). For more information, visit www.israel-theatre.com.
