Dancer/choreographer Rafael Amargo, 33, and his company will perform his Intimo at Tel Aviv's Suzanne Dellal Center June 21, 22, 24 and 25.
The Spanish heartthrob - his picture is on a lot of glossy magazine covers in Europe - is coming with four dancers and seven musicians. He describes Intimo as a close encounter with the music and steps of flamenco, the traditional dance form that underpins his eclectic choreography.
Amargo started dancing at age nine in his native Granada, graduating to principal dancer with such peers as Antonio Canales and Rafael Aguilar. After several years in Japan where he began to choreograph, he came home. In 1997, he created his own company, debuting with the well-received La Garra y El Angel, a mix of ethnic flamenco and modern dance elements that characterize his work.
Spain's top dance award is the MAX, which Amargo has won four times. He has also won the Positano Leonide Massine prize, Italy's top dance award. His latest work, Tiempo Muerta (2007), has played in Moscow, New York, Paris and at the Spoleto Festival in Italy, among the rest.
