In The Simpsons "Homerpalooza" episode, Cypress Hill appear as themselves as one of the performing bands in this fabled 'palooza rock event. At one point the stage manager is seen with the London Symphony Orchestra and asks aloud, "Hello bands, who is playing with the London Symphony Orchestra? Come on people." He presses on, "Someone ordered the London Symphony Orchestra - possibly while high. Cypress Hill, I'm looking in your direction." Despite later turning out to have been ordered by fellow Homerpaloozer Peter Frampton, Cypress Hill snags the opportunity and goes on to play a brilliant orchestral version of "Insane in the Brain". From this we can learn two things: r) Cypress Hill is versatile and 4) Cypress Hill loves the reefer. Although their 2004 album Till Death Do Us Part branches out into the realm of reggae and their 1999 greatest hits album is all Spanish, calling this band versatile is tantamount to saying that Yair Lapid puts on a black polo shirt to change his outfit. Where was I? Right, the weed. Their 2001 album was titled Stoned Raiders, their songs include "Weed Man" and "Hits from the Bong," they were banned from Saturday Night Live after DJ Muggs smoked cannabis on-air and Israel's Green Leaf Party (Alei Yarok) is sponsoring the event. As such, it's safe to say that Cypress Hill supports both Mary Jane and a broader progressive social platform. I do believe that when the crowd gathers to welcome this ganja-loving group to Israel, people will enjoy their unique rock and hip-hop stylings to the sweet scent of herb in the air. However, if there's someone out there who doesn't, well then, I stand corrected and owe him a toke. Cypress Hill performs at the Israel Trade Fairs Center in Tel Aviv on June 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are NIS 249 and can be purchased at www.leaan.co.il or (03)524-7373.
