An infectious brew of backwater folk, jam band experimentalism, classic southern guitar rock, singer-songwriter intimacy and new-school art rock, Kentucky-bred My Morning Jacket (pictured) is one of the few alternative bands to have come of age in the 00s and display major potential to become a member of rock's elite in the long run. The group was founded in 1998 and quickly garnered attention for its engaging live performances, despite remaining unsigned for several years. The band's lineup went through some changes, as did its sound, and MMJ emerged in 2005 with a fully-formed masterpiece called simply Z, considered to be one of the greatest discs of the decade to date. In an interview with Rolling Stone, band members claimed that they'd been aiming for something in between Neil Young's Harvest and Radiohead's The Bends - an odd alchemy which certainly paid off. MMJ has been working hard on its follow-up studio effort, set for release this June. In the meantime, web radio enthusiasts can check out a killer Z tour set, recorded at Philadelphia's Electric Factory venue in December 2006, by pointing their browsers to xponentialmusic.org and clicking on "interviews and performances" and then "concert archives" in the left-hand navigation bar. This valuable website features archives of many live shows available for streaming thanks to the University of Pennsylvania's public radio station WXPN. In addition, the band's official mymorningjacket.com/streams.html features plenty of older live footage and video clips. - B.J.
