Tchaikovsky's popular Yevgeny Onegin, first performed here five years ago, returns to the Israel Opera from June 24 to July 5 with Canadian baritone Brett Pogato debuting as the luckless Yevgeny.
Tchaikovsky wrote the libretto based on Pushkin's famous poem. In it, Onegin, arrogant and worldly, comes to spend the weekend at a country estate. There he meets Tatyana, who falls desperately in love with him, but he brushes her off. Years later they meet again. She is now a dazzling St. Petersburg hostess, and the wife of General Gremin. Now it's Onegin's turn, and he falls hard, but Tatyana (though she's still in love with him), tells him that she's married. Onegin leaves in despair and Tatyana sings of a love that can never be realized. Soprano Larissa Tetuev will play Tatyana, Yevgeny's spurned, then spurning, love. Russian tenor Viktor Lutsiuk sings Yevgeny's ill-starred friend, Lensky.
The director is Jean-Claude Auvray, the designer is Sasha Lisiansky and the Israel Opera orchestra is conducted by Dmitri Yurowski.
