853 candidates contesting Jordan's elections

AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan's Elections Commission spokesman says 853 candidates will compete for parliament's 120 seats in elections next month.

The Islamic opposition is boycotting to protest an electoral law they say will deprive them of votes, clearing the way for pro-government politicians to dominate the next parliament.

Commission spokesman Sameeh Maaytah said Wednesday the candidates for the Nov. 9 vote still need to be vetted but all are expected to be approved because there are no controversial figures among them.

He said the list includes 142 women.

A leader of the Islamic Action Front said seven opposition candidates are running in violation of the boycott. The leader spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.
