A major oil field estimated at 1.8 billion barrels was discovered in Afghanistan, a spokesman for the ministry of mines told Reuters Sunday.

"I do not know its price in the market. But the initial survey says there are 1.8 billion barrels of oil and I think there will be more than what it is estimated," he said.

The field was discovered by international geologists in the North of the country, between the Balkh and Shibergan provinces, according to Reuters.
