A 56-year-old man was arrested by police in Ashkelon on Tuesday on suspicion of attempting to mug and choke an elderly woman on the street.

Police said the man tried to snatch a bag from a 71-year-old woman, and began choking her after she resisted the theft. When he noticed a passerby, the man fled the scene.

An eye witness gave police a description of the suspect, leading to his arrest minutes later. The Ashkelon Magistrate's Court extended the suspect's custody on Wednesday by three days.
