Some of Israel's neighbors still don't recognize the country's right to exist, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi stressed to a newly-drafted group of soldiers on Sunday. "One does not have to be a military expert to understand that even after 61 years, some of our neighbors still do not recognize our right to peacefully exist in Israel," he said at the Tel Hashomer military absorption center. Referring to recent Kfir Brigade protests against settlement evacuations, Ashkenazi said the army should not be dragged into political disputes. Kadima MK Tzahi Hanegbi, who chairs the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, also spoke to the soldiers and addressed the threats faced by Israel. "The newspaper headlines talk about the Iranian threat, problems with Hamas in the South, and with Hizbullah in the North; the state of Israel will survive these threats and prosper," he said.
