A known criminal was killed in a suspected underworld hit in Migdal Haemek on Thursday afternoon, when an explosion detonated in his car in the city, Northern District police reported.

The man, a 45-year-old resident of the north who was well-known to police, was taken from the scene to the Valley Hospital in Afula in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his wounds.

The blast took place on Hanasim street in the city around 4pm, police said, leaving the car a charred wreck. There was no one else in the car at the time of the explosion and no other injuries were reported.

Police on Thursday tasked the northern branch of the YAMAR investigative unit with the investigation.

The blast came only two days after a well-known crime figure from Haifa was shot and killed outside the front door to his apartment in Haifa. Police said they believe the man was ambushed by an assassin who waited in the stairwell for him to come home, before shooting him at point blank range. That murder is being investigated by the Coastal District branch of YAMAR.
