Emmanuel school displays 'characteristics of racism'

The Emmanuel "pirate" school, which is in violation of a court ruling, is displaying "characteristics of racism," High Court Justice Hanan Meltzar said during a court hearing on Thursday.

The pirate school was founded after the High Court required that the original school stop operating two separate schools in the same building: one for Sephardim, and one – the “hassidic stream” – for Ashkenazim and for Sephardim prepared to conduct themselves according to Ashkenazi-haredi custom.

Meltzar's remarks came in response to the "pirate" school representative's argument that, "the parents will never allow a student who watches television learn with their girls."

The representative continued, "I am prepared to say that girls from this group (Sephardim) have a television, and these (Ashkenazim girls) don't."
