Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said US diplomatic cables calling him corrupt and an Islamist are "gossip" and "slander," Reuters reported on Sunday.

"The unserious cables of American diplomats, formed from gossip, magazines, allegations and slander are spreading worldwide via the Internet," Erdogan reportedly said on Turkish television. He also called the leaked cables "propaganda," suggesting that their may have been an ulterior motive to their release.

Wikileaks has published thousands of cables, including some that show a strained relationship between Turkey, the only Muslim country in NATO, and the US.
