An ungrateful calf weighing half a ton kicked a concrete wall at Moshav Hazon in the Galilee this week, bringing the wall collapsing on the legs of its owner, who ended up with fractures at Ziv Medical Center in Safed. Nothing happened to the sturdy calf. The 50-year-old man, Amram Shalom, suffering light to moderate injuries, underwent surgery to have the broken bones fused with screws. He is also receiving antibiotic therapy to prevent infection. But the rancher did not hold a grudge and decide to turn the calf into a steak dinner. "Farmers are tough. When I recover, I will go back to the farm," he said. "I prefer working with my cattle than with people. I live with and love nature and hope to feel better soon." Haim Dayan, director of the organization of cattle growers, said that while raising cows could sometimes be dangerous work, calves were usually quiet and easy to take care of, even though their weight may go over a ton. They may try to kick when being examined or weighed, however. When grazing in nature, male cows used for breeding have an advantage if their legs are strong. They sometimes have to be aggressive, and that could have caused the kick that brought down the wall, he suggested.
