GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Hamas  arrested a prominent Gaza physician best known for keeping the official count of Gazans killed in the fighting between the IDF and Palestinian militants in the past two decades, his brother told the Associated Press Saturday.

A senior Hamas official confirmed the arrest of Dr. Moawiya Hassanain but did not say why he was detained. He also requested anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the issue to local residents.

Hassanain is a loyalist of Fatah but has not been politically active for years however, and unlike other Fatah loyalists who refused to work after Hamas seized power of Gaza in 2007, Hassanain stayed on the job.
