In a ceremony led Tuesday by IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, the cornerstone was placed for a new housing project set to be constructed in the Negev this year.

Located in Omer, near Beersheba, the project will provide housing for dozens of officers and NCOs serving in combat and technological units. It is part of an IDF initiative to relocate many military bases – especially training and air force facilities – to the South.

Negev and Galilee Development Minister Silvan Shalom (Likud), OC Manpower Division Maj.-Gen. Avi Zamir and OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant also attended the ceremony.
