Iran Guards say they can replace Western oil firms

TEHRAN, Iran — A senior officer of Iran's Revolutionary Guard says the powerful military force is capable of filing in a gap in Iran's energy sector left by the withdrawal of large Western energy companies.

Yadollah Javani told the ILNA news agency Saturday that the Guard has the technological know-how to take on big energy projects instead of foreign companies.

As an example, he said the Guards could replace Royal Dutch Shell PLC and France's Total SA in projects in the port city of Assalouyeh south of Tehran.

The Guard has become a vast military-based conglomerate, amassing a network of economic and political power that extends to virtually every aspect of life in Iran.

It was created after the 1979 Islamic Revolution as an ideological bulwark to defend Iran'sclerical rule.
