Israel placed two firefighting planes on standby Tuesday in case Bulgaria needs them to battle a massive fire raging near Sofia.
Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman, currently in Italy, phoned his Bulgarian counterpart and offered Israel's assistance. He noted that Bulgaria was a great help in 2010 when it sent 92 firefighters to Israel to fight the Carmel Forest fire.
The decision to place the planes on standby comes some two weeks after the State Comptroller issued a blistering report on Israel's response to the Carmel fire and lamenting the state of the country's fire-fighting services.
