President Reuven Rivlin on Thursday decided to pardon Mea Shearim tax evader Yoel Kraus, who has served most of his five months sentence during which time his family was without a provider. Kraus, a member of the anti-Zionist Eida Haredit, is the father of 16 children. His wife Rachel is expecting their 17th child within coming days.

Rivlin’s decision was made on humanitarian grounds.

Kraus was imprisoned for operating a slaughtering house and not paying taxes on his income. The reason that he received a relatively light sentence was because the court understood that his tax evasion was not a matter of criminal intent, but of ideological persuasion in that he would not give part of his earnings to the Zionist state.
