ALGIERS - NATO carried out air strikes on Tuesday on the Libyan city of Misrata where forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi have been bombarding the port, a rebel spokesman said.

"The allied forces struck today," the spokesman, called Safieddin, told Reuters by telephone from the city. He also said there was fighting between rebels and Gaddafi loyalists in the southern and eastern outskirts of Misrata.
