The Tel Aviv District Court sentenced Eli Va'anunu, 52, to ten years in prison on Thursday for robbing an 89-year-old woman. According to the indictment, Va'anunu followed the woman to her apartment, threatened to murder her with his knife, and tied her to a chair. He went on to tear her gold jewelry off her neck and wrists and flee the scene with her money. "The state's vulnerable citizens deserve the court's protection and they should know that the legal system stands by their side," Judge Zvi Gorfinkel wrote in the verdict. "Both when they are out on the street and when they enter their homes, they should be protected from evil people trying to attack and rob them." Va'anunu had previously spent 20 years in prison for murder.
