Three weeks after the controversial raid on the Mavi Marmara Turkish passenger ship, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi on Tuesday awarded two medals of valor to the Navy’s elite Flotilla 13 – known as the Shayetet.

Commandos from the Shayetet killed nine passengers, claimed to be mercenaries by the IDF, who attacked them aboard the Mavi Marmara as it tried, together with five other ships, to break the Israel-imposed sea blockade on the Gaza Strip.

The medals were awarded to the unit on Tuesday in the presence of OC Navy Vice-Admiral Eliezer Marom and commander of the Shayetet Col. S. They were given for operations that are classified.
