Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal on Monday departed the Gaza Strip, AFP reported, following his first-ever visit to the Palestinian enclave.

"Abu al-Walid (Mashaal) left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah terminal this afternoon after his historic visit," Hamas spokesman Islam Shahwan confirmed to AFP.

Mashaal was in Gaza to mark the 25th anniversary of Hamas's founding. During the visit, he vowed never to give up even "an inch" of Palestinian territory or to recognize Israel.
