Medvedev: Russian tycoon Khodorkovksy not dangerous

SKOLKOVO, Russia - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky's release from jail would not be dangerous for society.

When asked by a reporter if it would be dangerous for society to release the tycoon, Medvedev said: "Absolutely not dangerous at all."

Khodorkovsky, once Russia's richest man, was arrested in 2003 after falling foul of the Kremlin under then-President Vladimir Putin. His oil company was brought to its knees by back tax claims and its main assets sold off by the state.

Putin, who has compared Khodorkovsky to US gangster Al Capone, said last December that the tycoon was a thief who should remain in jail.
