Meretz on Thursday defended the actions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activists who painted the white “Welcome to Jerusalem” sign in rainbow colors ahead of the 10th annual Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade.
"The painting of the city gates in the colors of pride is not an act of vandalism but an impressive and brave act, said Dror Mizrahi, chairman of the Meretz Pride Forum. "I'm only sorry that this act was done by private citizens instead of the Jerusalem Municipality."
Police opened an investigation into the painting incident, and the sign was immediately cleaned.
Elinor Sidi, director of Jerusalem’s Open House, the LGBT community center, said Thursday that the his organization is against all forms of violence, including vandalism of public property.
