US envoy George Mitchell will not bring letters of guarantee to the Israelis and the Palestinians during his upcoming visit to the region, Israel Radio reported on Saturday, citing an <i>Asharq Al-Awsat</i> report.

The pan-Arab newspaper quoted official French sources as saying that the would not be able to provide such guarantees, as most of the issues dividing the two sides – particularly the question of – have not yet been resolved. , the sources said, was not likely to endorse ’s guarantees on the matter.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas requires such guarantees as a precondition for negotiations for peace.
