Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu described new sanctions announced by the European Union against Iran on Monday as "a step in the right direction."

"We do not know what the result of the sanctions will be," he said, adding that "there must be intense pressure on Iran."

The sanctions will be judged by their results, he explained.

The European Union on Monday approved an oil embargo and economic sanctions on Iran's energy sector and central bank.
