Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reassured Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat on Friday that he had not decided to field a candidate against him in the October 22 mayoral race.

The head of the Likud on the Jerusalem city council, Elisha Peleg, said last week that with the blessings of the party leadership, he was trying to persuade Jerusalem Development Authority chairman Moshe Leon to run.

Leon, who is close to Netanyahu and Yisrael Beytenu head Avigdor Liberman, said Sunday that he had not yet made a decision about whether to run.
