Jerusalem Deputy Mayor and City Councilman Yosef “Pepe” Alalo will announce Saturday that he will challenge Mayor Nir Barkat in the city's upcoming municipal elections, he said Friday.

Alalo will be supported by both Meretz and Labor, and will make the announcement of his candidacy on Saturday evening alongside Labor leader Shelly Yacimovich and Meretz chief Zehava Gal-on, he said in the statement.

Barkat is already being challenged by Likud-backed candidate Moshe Lion in the October 22 election.
