A 40-year-old man who threatened his mother with a knife lightly wounded a police officer Saturday evening before authorities placed him under arrest.

According to Israel Police, the officer suffered a light wound to the hand.

Police were responding to a report concerning a man threatening his mother at their Ashdod apartment building.

Police later said they believed the man suffered from psychiatric problems.

"Authorities arrived at the scene and feared that the situation could have deteriorated quickly," a spokesperson for Israel Police said in a statement.

"Police moved into the apartment and successfully rescued the mother from the son who was holding a knife. During the rescue, the suspect managed to lightly wound an officer on the hand before being placed under arrest," the statement added.
