The Quartet Saturday issued a statement condemning attacks near Eilat on Thursday that resulted in the deaths of eight people, calling them "cowardly acts of premeditated terrorism."

"The Quartet hopes those involved in the planning and conduct of these gruesome attacks will quickly be brought to justice," the statement said.

The group, made up by the US, EU, UN, and Russia expressed concern over the "unsustainable situation in Gaza" and an escalation in violence, calling on both Hamas and Israel to show restraint.

"The Quartet also expresses its concern about the security situation in the Sinai Peninsula," the statement said, adding that it hoped the Egyptian government could find a way to ensure lasting security in the area.

"The Quartet extends its deepest condolences to the victims, their families and loved ones," the statement concluded.
