Israeli authorities released the Hamas leader Hassan Yousef, 56, from prison Thursday after serving a sentence of six years, Al Arabiya reported according to Hamas officials.

According to the report, Yousef was freed along with hundreds of other prisoners due to overcrowding in Israeli prisons.

Deputy Palestinian Prisoner Affairs Minister Ziad Abu Ein said that "about seventy prisoners serving their sentences in Israeli prisons" are awaiting their release, Al Arabiya reported. Abu Ein did not give details as to the identities of the additional prisoners.
