March 11, 2012 20:52

The Iron Dome defense battery near Ashkelon intercepted a rocket fired from Gaza towards the coastal city, Channel 2 news reported on Sunday.

In addition to the interception, witnesses reported hearing an explosion nearby. No casualties or damages were reported in the attacks, which followed a tense weekend in which more than 160 rockets were fired onto southern cities and towns.

The Iron Dome intercepted at least 37 rockets over the weekend, and IDF officials said a fourth battery would be installed within a number of weeks.
